THE SOCIAL JUSTICE LIBERTARIANS
-
May 2003
Social justice civil libertarians strongly support both civil liberties and social justice. The phrase "social justice libertarian" is new, but the political tradition and perspective are not.
For over a hundred years, Americans who created and supported the overlapping civil liberties and civil rights movements in the United States have usually shared a strong commitment to civil liberties and an equally strong commitment to social justice.
Prominent social justice libertarians include: at least five supreme court justices (Brandeis, Brennan, Douglas, Black and T. Marshall), the founders and leaders of the significant civil liberties and civil rights organizations, many prominent journalists, teachers, writers, artists, religious and labor leaders, community activists, and millions of ordinary men and women. Social justice libertarians are as American as mom, apple pie, skyscrapers, Hollywood movies, barbequed ribs, jeans, blues, jazz, rock & roll and the Bill of Rights.
This annotated bibliography lists more than 200 books that outline the American social justice libertarian tradition and history, primarily in the 20th century. This is a sampler and a first draft, not a definitive listing.
Welcome aboard. This is the beginning of the beginning of the beginning.....
