writingdance

Ann Murphy is a brilliant dance writer, widely regarded as one of the absolutely top dance critics in the US today. She's also my beloved soul mate and sister.

Here in the spring of 2007, she has begun a blog called writingdance. In her honor, I have created this page to make available just some of the many pieces she's done over the years.

At long last, Ann Murphy's writingdance is now ... hereinstead.

writingdance - the blog
Get regular doses of Annie's wonderful prose, and gorgeous graphics calling 'em like she see 'em. This has got to be one of the most beautiful blogs ever!

Flamenco Fever
"Last fall I went to see flamenco and Spanish dance at the tiny Eureka Theatre on Jackson, where a hint of stale popcorn still haunts the air from its days as a movie house...

Margaret Jenkins: Collaborator
"Dance in the Bay Area was almost as sleepy as Market Street. San Francisco Ballet rehearsed somewhere out in the Sunset in a converted garage, while the best Martha Graham instructors were sequestered at UC Berkeley, where you had to be enrolled to take a class.....

African Wisdom
"ALONZO KING is the latest among a small but growing number of dance makers for whom the stage is a meeting place between African and Western culture. In their work, performance styles mingle and sometimes fuse to create subtly altered forms of ballet and modern dance.....

African American Tales
"DURING much of the 1980's, while large segments of the American modern-dance world were exploring semiotic theory, the choreographer Lula Washington was making dances of taut emotion and fierce drama, depicting the deeply nuanced and often painful complexities of the African-American story....

18 reviews at S.F. Weekly
Serious dance writing and lots of it.

24 reviews in the San Francisco Chronicle
Annie working within the Chron's limits does her thing brilliantly.

25 stories at Dance Magazine
Listed at a search engine. Not beautiful, but Annie's words are here.

Many stories at the East Bay Express
Mostly shorter pieces.
