Peter Cohen's Page@hereinstead.com

Peter Cohen has personally taught an astonishing number of drug researchers, journalists and policy makers around the world about drug policy and drug effects. He is a Professor at the University of Amersterdam and the director of CEDRO, the Center for Drug Research there.

Peter is the most cosmopolitan and sophisticated person I've ever known. He's brilliant, imaginative, intellectually courageous and ridiculously silly. Under the proper circumstances, he could make a tree stump giggle.

Peter had a web site before I even knew that people could have such things. At the CEDRO site you can find some of Prof Cohen's many publications in way too many languages. Below are a few of our favorites.

Professor Cohen takes a break from cooking up a storm in Tuscany to pose as Mussolini.

  • The Drug Prohibition Church

"Whatever the origin of the UN Drug Treaties, and whatever the official rhetoric about their functions, the best way to look at them now is as religious texts."

So begins this remarkable, pull no punches piece. Yes, Peter Cohen as he is in private, but as he has rarely been seen in print (at least in English). The Drug Prohibition Church has achieved the impossible -- it is an "instant classic."

  • The Irrelevance of Drug Policy

Brand new, hot off the presses, the first report from the most important international, comparative study of cannabis use ever.

  • Peter's recent article: Is the addiction doctor the voodoo priest of Western man?

February 2001: Professor Cohen begins with the following dedication:

"For Harry Levine, who invented the 'discovery' of addiction."

Yes hereinsteaders, a prominent European professor has actually dedicated an article to me because of my article "The Discovery of Addiction." And this has happened a mere twenty-five years after I first wrote the thing. And he just happens to be a dear friend of mine. Don't the independent wheels of academic scholarship move like lightning?
